Stuff comes up. That seems to be what stuff does. It comes up, hangs around, and does down. Hardly ever does it come alone, There is usually stuff already up, stuff behind about to come up, stuff on the way down, memories of stuff and the possibility of stuff coming up or going down. Easy to get caught in all this. Stuff that is up, seems to expand and contract for a while then it is gone. The tendency is to focus on the stuff in all its stages, but not to pay attentions to 'gone'. Seeing negative space takes time. There is some subtlety involved. Freeing attention from stuff and its memory without giving attention another target can be unsettling, but 'gone' reveals much. Not anther thing under it, that is not 'gone'. Not the memory of what is 'gone' to use for contrast to prove the gone-ness of what was, but really 'gone' without anything taking its place. One has to pass through, and put aside the chains of habit. Then to realize and clarify this 'gone' without making it into something, without attaching to it, without leaving it or drawing close to it, but to see the seeds of it in all things. Holding tight to something, see the its birth flowering, see its growth, and see its end. See how gone gives rise to the next berth and flowering. Even 'gone' will go. One can put things aside, but to put aside the idea of putting things aside is better. But really do it. Don't just have the idea of putting aside and mistake that for intention or an action of putting aside. Putting aside is putting aside. Understanding putting aside is just collecting toys for the mind. Like giving a child something to make him quiet. Only putting aside is putting aside. It does not involve thought or intellect or analysis, just putting aside. It does not cause loss or happiness or create space for something new. Choosing to not put aside cannot prevent putting aside. Choosing to hold on will not prevent final loss. Choosing to not see the coming and going does not prevent coming and going from filling the mind. It is said that even those who do not know the path, walk the path.
